India Officially Calls for a New Financial World at BRICS 2025 Summit

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has called for a new “multipolar and inclusive world order,” at the BRICS 2025 summit in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. In his opening speech, Modi took a veiled jibe at the US and the Western-dominated IMF and the World Bank. He stressed that the Global South has been neglected for decades with no distribution of resources and having no say at the table.

“Today the world needs a new multipolar and inclusive world order,” said Modi during the opening speech of the BRICS 2025 summit. “This will have to start with comprehensive reforms in global institutions. Reforms should not be merely symbolic, but their real impact should also be visible,” he stressed.

Modi stressed that the Global South was “inadequately represented” by the “global institutions formed in the 20th century.” From security-related issues to technology access and finances, developing countries were kept at the bottom of the table, he said. The PM said at the BRICS 2025 summit that they are looking to undo the damage done by the West. This includes providing equal representation to all countries irrespective of their financial power and background.

“The Global South has often been a victim of double standards,” said Modi at the BRICS 2025 summit. “Whether it is development, distribution of resources, or security-related issues, the interests of the Global South have not been prioritized. On issues like climate finance, sustainable development, and technology access, the Global South has often received nothing but token gestures,” he stated.

“Two-thirds of humanity has not been adequately represented in the global institutions formed in the 20th century. Countries that have a major contribution to today’s global economy have not been given a place at the decision-making table. This is not just a question of representation but also of credibility and effectiveness. Without the Global South, these institutions seem like a mobile with a SIM card but no network. These institutions are unable to deal with the challenges of the 21st century.” he summed it up at the BRICS 2025 summit.
